Remembrance Day

Turns out Canada also has this on the 11th November, and as Ottawa is the capital it was a fantastic memorial service.

It had everything:

Prince Charles and his sidekick Camilla
War Veterans of all types and ages
Overhead Aircraft fly-overs
MASSIVE real artillery shells
Canadian Mounties
fantastic Choral and Bagpipe music

and much more...

It was a very sombre occasion and was kinda nippy,... although as I was about to find out nothing compared to December weather - oh no. The were massive crowds and the procession was great with representatives of all the Canadian divisions and regiments, the speeches were in both french and english which I liked because I can't understand all the english stuff. They took security very seriously, oh and who knew Prince Charles had a position in the Canadian army? he had his full uniform on, apparently he is the Vice-Admiral of the Canadian Maritime Forces (the navy for those who don't know what that means). He had a rather impressive display on, and he has numerous titles as he also the Lieutenant-General of the Army, incredible huh?

Anyway the whole spectacle was fantastic. Well worth the visit.

Swimming in Canada

Okay a strange thing happened the other day. I was swimming in the university swimming pool and I have to say the music being played was the most bizarre experience ever; only in Canada can you be in a swimming pool with the Theme Tune to Star wars playing. and to add to that a random collection of Country and Punk music. It was very bizarre and strange, but it was definitely hilarious!!

Montreal '09 (where the weird things are)

Okay well the Montreal trip was, well, interesting. It was fun and amazing except there was interesting weird experiences. Our hotel, was to our surprise, in the gay village of Montreal - now as strange as that may seem, it was a blessing in disguise as it made the trip that extra bit more special. Mainly due to the sheer amount of unreal events that happened. Oh and thank-god the drinking age is only 18, it facilitated some bizarre drunken behavior. But by all accounts it was a fantastic trip, and definitely one to tell the grandchildren!

I am going to rundown the 5 most strange things to happen to me in Montreal 2009, okay everyone hold on to those seats, here goes:

#5 - The Lying Down Game.

Okay some of you know exactly what this is. basically you lie down head down somewhere strange and compete to find the weirdest places! simples. We played it in the room, on the metro train, on the station platform, and all around Montreal. Now this may not seem very weird, but I can assure you, all the local citizens thought it was VERY weird. It was however hilarious and there are some prize peach photos up on the old facebook.

#4 - Metro Hopping.

Okay well were at number 4. Now I hope the Canadian authorities don't come across this one is technically illegal. When the four of us (Me, Katie, Dean and Ruth) decided to head back to the hotel after a failed attempt to find a straight nightclub (yes, you did read that right!) didn't want to pay for another metro ticket we hopped over the turnstiles at the station, luckily the man on guard was probably reading up on his favorite topics of the day, or maybe a sudoku. But whatever he was doing he didn't see us, but I bet the CCTV did. oops.

#3 - Scary Sex Toys.

Okay number 3 people. Now when in Montreal there seems to be plenty of 3 things: gay men, sex toys and cannabis. Now the sex toys are found in the sex shops (which is every other shop in the 'village'), when arriving in most of these shops the conventional Dildo/DVD/Underwear paraphernalia is present; however if you decide to brave the trip 'downstairs' to the basement, you come across a whole lot of other stuff. Let's just say that it included - footlong anal prizers, gimp masks & leather apparel, bondage sheets, basically anything really that a mental nympho can come up with! It was a definite eye opener. and itf you thought the products were weird, wait until you meet the staff. They're a completely different story.

#2 - Mauritius.

Okay here we go. I'm going to have to swallow my pride and tell this one, it's too funny not to really. Okay well it started when Dean mentioned that he wanted to check out the gay club 'unity' not far from our hotel, we all agreed but on a few conditions from me. I was not to be molested. Anyways one drink led to another and we all got very merry and arrived at unity, a few hours and passed and apparently in my drunken state I turned around to Katie and exclaimed "Wouldn't it be the funniest thing ever if I tried to pull a boy?". How much I had to drink I'm not actually sure. Anyway the next thing I knew, I had a guy nibbling on my neck and buying me beers, we eventually ended up calling him Mauritius. Dean couldn't believe it and spent the next few hours laughing at my drunken expense. When I eventually sobered up, I had to obliviously tell this guy I was straight, suffice to say he didn't actually believe me; so I had to tell him I had a boyfriend for him to leave me alone. I think any shred of dignity I ever had I lost that night, oh well. It was the second weirdest thing ever... and despite the obvious confusion of the whole event it was amazingly funny, and provided some seriously good mocking material for a good couple of weeks.

#1 - When a Drag Queen met the Pierce Brosnan.

Okay this is the big one. I classify this as possibly the weirdest and strangest thing to ever happen to me. In terms of confusion, shock and disgust this is clearly the number 1. It all started when walking up and the main avenue in the 'village' where we were staying we came across a drag show. Dean obviously very keen on finding out about it, I was intrigued as well and walked up to the entrance. We found a drag queen sat perched on a stool by the door wearing a rather large and extravagant red hat and coat, combined with the token drag makeup and black latex trousers. Things were going fine as we discussed ticket prices and the like, however I made the crucial mistake of asking for a photo with him (or her, as I'm told I have to reference them). So after the photo he looks at me and then without any chance to save myself he delves a hand down my shirt and looks down, "oooh, only a real man has that kind of hair!". Oh shite, I thought. I was in a state of shock, before I could fight for freedom he'd yanked a clump of chest hair (which I call the Pierce Brosnan) off me and then popped the lot into his mouth in front of me and chewed, "mmmmmm, tasty" he said with those eyes that only a perverse homosexual fifty year old man could muster. Of course the other three were beside themselves, and I was purely violated. It is the single most weirdest moment ever, I will never forget how unexpected and strange the whole ordeal was.

And that's the highlights. Check out the photos for more insights into my Montreal trip 2009. Thanks for reading so far, oh and Happy Halloween!!

Apologies...

Okay to the handful of dedicated readers I am deeply apologetic for my lack of postage. It is inexcusable! But alas, I must prioritize on my work! But anyways there is more coming...

Niagara Falls

Well I went to Niagara Falls with a few friends, and it was awesome...

Among the highlights was my first experience in an international back-packing hostel, was actually pretty good I personally thought. Had a BBQ one night, which was good apart from the fact that they ran out of beef burgers and then sneekily switched to veggie ones - which I noticed and wasn't best pleased, o well, you can't win 'em all.

We went to Fallsview casino on one of the nights and I made $30 on the craps table, was well chuffed. Thing is we all dressed posh to go to the casino and found out everyone was wearing jeans and t-shirt - woops. but it was funny coz at one point some random guy had a problem with the slots and asked if me and him worked there! was pretty funny, I could have alleviated that man of his chips and done an oceans 11, but decided against the idea in the end; especially after the craps.

The falls themseleves were awesome as everyone knows, we went on the maide of the mist - of course. Was well good, got very wet, and got TWO ponchos. very happy about that, also picked up a few xmas pressies, wink wink. The best bit and worst bit had to be this random tourist info guy who was so chatty and enthusiastic he managed to get from the attractions of Niagara to having a girlfriend in Hull, England, and then finally through to how many shrimps you would get on a regular main dish at the wild mushroom?! He went on FOREVER. It was a struggle to get away. I felt sort of sorry for him really, but he was a bit of a nutcase.

It takes around 6 hours to get to Niagara Falls from Ottawa, and with a changeover at 4am in Toronto, it was tiring and went on for a while, but we did get to briefly see Toronto at sunrise which was cool. But it was definitely and awesome weekend! Thanks guys!

Oh and I also got to see Dan Akroyd's Star on the Boulevard! was well excited.

Intramural soccer

I have signed up for intramural soccer with a team made up of some exchange guys (English, Irish, Welsh, Scottish and a token French!) were called Team GB, we only got our shirts the other day!! I'm only a sub but it should be good fun, I'll play a couple of matches - were in Division B, our first game is against the athletics 1st soccer team, should be interesting! I'll let you know how we get on?? Peace out (Number 12)

Beer Pong! & Dixie Cups

Well today I was introduced to a new North American Phenomenon - Beer Pong! The ultimate drinking game. Basically you fill the cups with a certain beverage and have two teams either side of a table. Then you take it in turns to try and get the ping-pong ball into each others cups, If you succeed the other team must drink the drink that the ball landed into. simples. Although depending on what you put in the cups, this game can be pretty lethal!

Also did my first beer funnel, was well good. It's pretty narly, the first try was a bit messy! It takes a bit of practice, I haven't gone to a proper frat party yet - I have heard there's one coming up though. I will have to sneak in (as everyone seems to do around here!). Despite that I have had some awesome nights with the CueX exchange club, we have a couple of nights a week clubbin downtown, so far they have been awesome!! Vodka's are expensive here though - It's all about the beer! I got wasted last week and ended up walking to the wrong University!! So I got to see Ottawa at sunrise as I sauntered miles through pinewood forest to get back to my place! However I met a sweet old lady half way back and she drew me a map. Was a definate experience, don't think I'll ever forget that.
